The historic property was originally patented along the Rappahannock River in 1641. In 1803, the plantation was known as Leesville. During the Civil War, the plantation home above the English style terraces was bombed and burned by the Union gunboats.
In 1983, Chuck and Anne Geyer began managing the transformation of the riverside into the Westmoreland Berry Farm for the Voorhees family.
In 1995, a land donation by the Voorhees family to the Nature Conservancy of an adjoining natural area created the Voorhees Nature Preserve. The Nature Preserve trails are accessible upon check in at the farm market.
